Quý Mão (癸猫) — Lucia Pham (2023)

In Chinese zodiac mythology, it is said that the cat slept through the mythical race that determined the twelve zodiacs. By the time it woke from its nap and rushed to the gates of heaven, it was too late; the race was over and the spots had already been taken by other more diligent candidates.

In Vietnamese tradition, however, the cat takes the place of the rabbit in the zodiac. Much like the way they protect rice crops from hungry vermin, the cat is a symbol of protection against bad spirits. Blending Vietnamese and Chinese type, this wonderfully maximalist piece celebrating the year of the cat is a vibrant representation of the fierce protector.
